Delete your Viral account

You can delete your Viral Social Network account at any time. You do not need to contact us first, and you do not need to be able to open the app.

Delete from inside the app

1. Open Viral and sign in.
2. Go to Profile → Settings → Account.
3. Choose Delete account, then prove it is you: type your password, or ask for a six-digit code by email if you sign in with a link or through Google or Apple and have no password. Then confirm.

Your username and email address are released at once. Neither can be used to sign in again, and the username becomes available to other people.

Delete without the app

If you cannot sign in, email support@getviral.social from the address on the account, with the subject Delete my account. We action these within 30 days.

What deleting your account does

• Deletes the account itself and releases your email address and username, so it can no longer be signed in to and the username becomes available to somebody else.
• Deletes your posts, comments and reactions, who you follow and who follows you, everyone you blocked or muted, and your saved preferences, privacy and notification settings.
• Erases a conversation nobody else is left in — its messages, files, notification previews and keys — and removes you and your messages from the ones other people are still in.
• Destroys the keys that made your messages readable, and writes a receipt you can check afterwards.

What it does not do — and what to do instead

Deleting the account does not, by itself, erase the things you wrote. Rather than imply otherwise, here is what stays and how to remove it.

• A conversation nobody else is left in is erased with your account. Its messages, files, notification previews and keys all go. A conversation somebody else is still in is not destroyed — that would make their own history unreadable — but you are removed from it and your messages are removed with you. Erasing a conversation yourself, from the chat menu, is still the stronger and more immediate operation, and in a direct message it asks the other participant to agree first. • Your posts, replies and media are not erased by account deletion. Delete them from the “…” menu on each one before you close the account, or ask us and we will remove them.
• Your profile name, bio and avatar are not erased. Clear them from Profile → Edit profile before deleting, or ask us.
• A verified phone number is not erased. Ask us and we will remove it and the contact matches derived from it.
• A device that is already signed in is not signed out at the moment you press delete. Its session stops working when it expires. Sign out of your devices first if that matters to you.

What is kept, and for how long

• Content in shared spaces. Your messages are removed from conversations you were in, but a conversation is a shared record and not everything in it is yours: a reply that quotes you, or somebody describing what you said, is their message and stays. Posts, comments and other public content are removed with the account.
• Money records. Purchase and payout records — amounts, dates and who paid whom, never message content — are retained for as long as tax and accounting law requires, typically seven years.
• Child-safety evidence. If something was reported for child safety, that material is preserved as evidence for the authorities: only what was reported, access-controlled, held for at least 90 days, and deleted when the matter closes. See Child safety.
• Moderation records. Moderation actions stay in a tamper-evident log holding hashes and categories only — no message, no name. If somebody reported a message you sent them, the cryptographic proof that you sent it is kept, without the message text.
• Backups. Deleted data can persist in backups and in our database’s point-in-time restore window until that window rolls past the deletion, and in the database’s own internal logs until they roll. This applies to disappearing messages too: they are deleted from the live database when their timer runs out, but a restore to a moment before that can still contain them until the window rolls past it.

Deleting some data without deleting your account

You do not have to close your account to remove things. Individual posts, replies and messages can be deleted from the “…” menu on each one; a conversation can be cleared or erased from the chat menu; and any conversation can be set to delete its own messages automatically after an hour, a day, a week, or up to 90 days.
